This coming Monday, the 25th April, is a national day of remembrance. So on this public holiday, what will you be doing? Do you have a family history you reflect on, do you attend an Anzac Day service or is it a day you simply feel thankful for living in Australia? However you wish to celebrate it, we hope it is a wonderful day for you. Here are a few facts we thought to highlight on this commemeorative day:

Facts about Anzac Day

  • It was first acknowledged as a half day holiday on the 30th April 1915
  • The date 25th April was then officially named Anzac Day in 1916
  • ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
  • It is a day to remember many; service men and women, those who supported/contributed throughout the wars, families left at home, and even the animals such as horses, dogs and donkeys, all who served loyally.
  • By the 1920’s Anzac Day was already reflecting on 60,000 Australians and 18000 New Zealanders who had died in war.
  • Dawn services are held all over Australia and many other parts of the world – it links to the dawn landing in Gallipolli where many soldiers were killed.
  • Dawn services and Dawn marches first began in Albany, Western Australia on 25th April 1923.
  • Anzac Day services are now held at war memorials all over the world, and this service is always accompanied by a bugle player who plays the “Last Post.”

Living in Australia

To all of you living in Australia, we hope this Anzac Day long weekend is one you spend with loved ones or that you do something you love. However you choose to spend it, the freedom we enjoy is something we should never take for granted. We must remember and pay tribute to the thousands of men and women who have sacrificed their own lives so we could live in this wonderful country we call home.

Lest we forget.
